According to a report by Channels Television from 1:19, on Thursday, 4 June, 2026, the Commander of the Special Tactical Squad (STS), ACP Victor Godfrey, has revealed details surrounding the murder of a traditional ruler in Imo State, saying the monarch and five other victims were ambushed, killed and burnt beyond recognition after being lured to a meeting in their community.
Godfrey disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television while providing an update on the arrest of suspects linked to the crime and other criminal activities uncovered by the police.
According to the police commander, the slain monarch, HRH Eze Barrister Paulinus Ekwueme (Ochia I of Ochia Kingdom), had spent many years in the United States before returning to Nigeria to celebrate Easter with members of his community.
“The monarch has spent several years abroad in United States and returned home to celebrate Easter with his people. He was allegedly lured to a meeting at Ochia, his community in Imo State. Upon returning to Owerri, him and five others were ambushed, over-powered and brutally murdered and burnt beyond recognition,” Godfrey said.
The police officer explained that investigations into the incident led to the arrest of several suspects who allegedly participated in the attack. He said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle violent criminal networks operating across parts of the country.
Godfrey noted that intelligence gathering and coordinated tactical operations were instrumental in tracking down those connected to the killing, adding that the suspects are currently assisting investigators.
