NDC presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has lamented the worsening food situation in Nigeria, stating that many people now struggle to obtain enough to eat.
In a video from 5.34 shared by Advocacy for Good Governance, speaking at the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology conference, Obi said food security should be one of the country’s top priorities because people cannot function well when they are hungry.
He argued that Nigeria should first produce enough food to feed its own people before focusing on exporting agricultural products to international markets. According to him, many Nigerians are finding it difficult to afford regular meals, making local food availability more important than exports.
Addressing students at the event, Obi suggested that many of them were likely hungry because of the current economic realities. He also urged university authorities to reflect on the challenges students face daily.
Recalling his days as a student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Obi said he took part in a protest after the school reduced the number of meat pieces served in students’ meals from three to two.
He contrasted that experience with the present situation, saying students today would be fortunate to find food at all, let alone complain about the amount of meat served.
Obi maintained that ensuring Nigerians have access to affordable food is essential for national development.
In his words, “As a student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, we protested, I protested, I was part of the protest, when they reduced our meat from three to two. Today, you will be lucky if you see food talk less of meat….See More
