Retired Commodore Kunle Olawunmi has said the power, money and privileges that come with Nigeria’s presidency could change how people behave once they occupy the office.
Olawunmi, a former Deputy Director of Defence Administration at Defence Headquarters, made the remarks during an episode of State Affairs with Edmund Obilo, published on the Edmund Obilo Podcast YouTube page on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
During the interview from 16:51, the retired military officer was asked about the possibility of contesting for the presidency, with the interviewer suggesting that occupying the position could give him a deeper understanding of the realities of power.
Responding, Olawunmi described the experience of entering the Presidential Villa as different from what people might imagine. He said he had previously visited Aso Rock for meetings but no longer did so.
He also recalled the atmosphere at the villa during the administrations of former military leaders Sani Abacha and Ibrahim Babangida, saying the environment conveyed a strong sense of power and influence.
Olawunmi warned that people who believe they would remain unchanged after becoming president might behave differently when exposed to the wealth and privileges associated with the office.
He said, “So when you are made president, as you’re talking now, if you get there, you won’t behave very well again. You see power and money and affluence.”
The retired officer added that the influence of presidential power could affect most people, saying, “And 99 percent of human beings will misbehave.”
