Nigerian economist Professor Pat Utomi has challenged young people to think about the personal risks of electoral violence before agreeing to carry out illegal instructions from politicians during the 2027 general elections.

Utomi raised the issue in a post on his official X account on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, warning young people to question why politicians who ask them to snatch ballot boxes would not involve their own children in the act.

He argued that anyone being urged to commit such a crime should consider why the politician giving the instruction would not be willing to send his own son to take the same risk.

Addressing young people directly, Utomi wrote, “Dear young man, before you agree to snatch a ballot box in 2027, ask yourself one question; if the corrupt politician sending you into the streets to commit that crime truly believed in what he was asking you to do, why would he not send his son to accompany you?”
