Retired Commodore Kunle Olawunmi has said the Nigerian military can end the Boko Haram insurgency within six months if President Bola Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, gives the necessary directive.

Olawunmi, a former Commandant of the Defence Intelligence College and former Deputy Director of Defence Administration at Defence Headquarters, made the claim during an episode of State Affairs with Edmund Obilo, released on YouTube on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

During the interview from 12:03, the retired officer defended security agencies against criticism over their conduct, arguing that personnel often act on instructions from their superiors.

He illustrated his point with an example of how security operatives could monitor a person’s movements using travel records, explaining that a passenger’s name on an aircraft manifest could help authorities track their journey.

Olawunmi said security personnel would carry out such assignments when directed, adding that the military had the capacity to take decisive action against Boko Haram if given clear orders by the country’s leadership.

He said, “The Nigerian military I know, I have the capacity to end the insurgency if they start today. Listen to me very well, if they start today, in six months, they will clear the Boko Haram problem.”

Reiterating his position, Olawunmi said the outcome depended on a direct instruction from the Commander-in-Chief to the military and other security agencies.

“If the Commander-in-Chief directs the Armed Forces, including all the security architecture, to end Boko Haram in six months, it will end,” Olawunmi said.
