Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has recalled former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi’s role in the political campaign that led to the defeat of an incumbent president in the 2015 election.
Wike made the remarks at an event organised by the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State, where political stakeholders unveiled candidates and declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking from 12:22 about Amaechi’s political legacy, Wike highlighted his involvement in the campaign against former President Goodluck Jonathan. He also questioned whether Amaechi still stood by the political principles he had previously defended, particularly those relating to agreements between northern and southern leaders.
Emphasising the significance of Amaechi’s role in the 2015 election, Wike said, “History will remember him for having led a campaign that removed a sitting president.”
The FCT minister further argued that political leaders should remain consistent with the positions they take, especially when those positions involve understandings between different regions. He questioned whether the principles that informed earlier political decisions were still being upheld amid current political realignments.
Wike also reaffirmed his support for Tinubu and called on political stakeholders in Rivers State to unite under the Rainbow Coalition. He said the alliance had agreed to back the president and candidates endorsed for other elective positions in the 2027 elections.
