According to a report by Daily Trust on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, has called on the Federal Government to take firm economic measures against South African companies operating in Nigeria.

His position follows renewed xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians living in South Africa.

The development has raised concerns among Nigerian lawmakers, prompting discussions on how best to respond to protect citizens abroad while addressing the broader implications for bilateral relations.

Oshiomhole made his position known during plenary, where he urged authorities to move beyond routine diplomatic engagements and consider actions grounded in reciprocity.

He proposed that Nigeria should reassess the operations of major South African companies within its borders, including MTN Nigeria and MultiChoice Nigeria.

According to him, reviewing their licences would serve as a strategic response to the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa, while also demonstrating a commitment to protecting national interests.

His remarks highlighted the possibility of strengthening domestic participation in industries such as telecommunications and pay television, which have long been influenced by international operators.

He emphasized the importance of building local capacity and ensuring that economic benefits are retained within the country.

In addition to economic considerations, Oshiomhole addressed the situation of Nigerians residing in South Africa.

He maintained that many Nigerians living there are actively engaged in productive activities and contribute meaningfully to the economy of their host country.

His comments reflected the view that Nigerian citizens abroad are not dependent on foreign systems but are instead participants in economic growth.
