Nigerian economist Professor Pat Utomi has questioned calls for the police to arrest people promoting “rig and die” ahead of elections, arguing that supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) should be at the forefront of advocating free and fair elections.

Utomi made the remarks in a post on his official X account on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, in response to a man who urged security operatives to arrest anyone promoting electoral rigging and violence.

The man had argued that elections should not be treated as warfare and that violence should not become accepted in a democracy.

Reacting to the comment, Utomi questioned why anyone should face arrest for speaking against electoral rigging if they had no sinister motives. He also argued that APC members should be among the strongest advocates for credible elections if the party genuinely supports the process.

In his response on X, Utomi wrote, “If you don’t have sinister motives, why should anyone be arrested for promoting rig and die? If the APC believes in free and fair elections, its members should be among those promoting it the most”.
