FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has taken aim at the opposition’s choice of a vice-presidential candidate, arguing that pairing former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would not address the problems he sees with their ticket.
Wike made the remarks at a Rainbow Coalition gathering in Rivers State, where political figures unveiled candidates and declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election. Channels TV shared a video from 13:19 of the event on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
During his address, Wike criticised the opposition’s political choices and questioned whether selecting Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate would make the ticket more convincing. He used the occasion to defend the coalition’s decision to support Tinubu.
Wike also brought up Amaechi’s earlier position on the unwritten power-sharing understanding between northern and southern Nigeria, recalling his role in the campaign against former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
The minister’s comments came amid ongoing political realignments as parties and their supporters prepare for the 2027 election, with alliances and candidate choices drawing increased attention.
Making his assessment of Atiku’s ticket and Amaechi’s selection, Wike said, “Let us tell the truth: as bad as Atiku’s ticket is, attaching Rotimi Amaechi as VP wasn’t it.”
