In a heartbreaking incident in Akure, Ondo State, two young siblings, five-year-old Jelad Oluwaranakinse and his three-year-old brother Jenson, tragically lost their lives in a fire that engulfed their apartment on Wednesday. According to PUNCH, the devastating event has left the local community in shock and mourning.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that their mother, Mrs. Deborah Oluwaranakinse, had allegedly left the children locked inside their home while she went out to buy food. Unfortunately, during her absence, the fire broke out, completely consuming the apartment. An eyewitness described the frantic efforts of neighbors, stating, “When the fire started, the neighbors around made efforts to put it out and rescue the kids, but their efforts were unsuccessful.”

Despite their brave attempts to save the children, the situation escalated quickly. Another witness noted that the fire seemed to ignite without warning, and no specific cause had been identified at the time of reporting. “People called the state fire service, but by the time they arrived, things had gone out of hand. The kids had died,” the witness shared, reflecting the deep sense of helplessness felt by those who tried to intervene.

 

The aftermath of the fire was harrowing, with the charred remains of the two boys later taken to the morgue at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Akure.

Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the tragic news on Thursday, stating, “The two male children left in the room were choked and burnt. One is Jelad Oluwaranakinse, aged five, and the second is Jenson Oluwaranakinse. Their mother, one Mrs. Deborah Oluwaranakinse, locked the two children inside their room and went out to search for food.” She assured the public that investigations were underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
