Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has criticised the state of the nation under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that Nigeria has suffered years of poor governance and questioning the president’s commitment to national unity.
Speaking during an interview from 4:32 on channels Television on Sunday, 7 June, 2026, Baba-Ahmed referenced a newspaper comment he attributed to Tinubu from the 1990s, claiming it reflected doubts about Nigeria’s unity as a country.
According to him, “Newspaper comment of his Excellency Alhaji Tinubu in the 90s where he said he didn’t believe in Nigeria as one country. Fast forward to where we are today, Nigeria hopelessly mismanaged since 2015 to date.”
The former lawmaker used the remark to support his broader criticism of the country’s leadership trajectory over the last decade. He argued that Nigeria’s political and economic challenges have worsened since 2015, citing concerns about governance, national cohesion and the welfare of citizens.
Baba-Ahmed maintained that many Nigerians are facing increasing hardship and expressed concern over what he described as the inability of successive administrations to adequately address key national issues. He suggested that the country’s current difficulties reflect deeper structural and leadership problems that require urgent attention.
The Labour Party chieftain has been a vocal critic of the administration and has repeatedly called for reforms aimed at improving governance, strengthening democratic institutions and restoring public confidence in government.
