Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has recalled confronting former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai over his handling of the Shiite crisis in Kaduna.
Sowore made the statement during an interview from 10:54 on Channels TV, while discussing the legal troubles facing former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and El-Rufai, who are currently facing investigations or legal actions by government agencies.
He said he had previously warned the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to think about the future before pursuing actions against political opponents.
Sowore recalled meeting El-Rufai and questioning him about his actions while he was governor of Kaduna State.
According to Sowore, El-Rufai had faced criticism over the government’s handling of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, commonly known as the Shiites.
Sowore alleged that thousands of people were buried following the clashes involving the group and security forces in Kaduna.
He said he reminded El-Rufai of a previous position that the group’s leader would not leave court, and used El-Rufai’s current legal challenges to illustrate how political circumstances can change.
In his words, “I had the opportunity to meet El-Rufai, and I said when you guys had the opportunity to make the country a better place for justice, you were groundstanding in Kaduna, you had to bury 3,000 people overnight, shites, and groundstanding that their leader would never get out of the court, look at where you found yourself.”
