National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu has praised the United States for its role in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, claiming that an entire generation of leaders from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and ISIS operating in Nigeria had been wiped out.

Ribadu made the remarks on Viable Tv Tuesday, October 27, 2026, during the opening ceremony of a high-level forum in Abuja focused on lessons from African cooperation in counterterrorism, intelligence sharing and emerging technologies.

The event, held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre under the Office of the National Security Adviser, brought together delegations from across Africa, the Sahel region and international partner countries.

While addressing participants, Ribadu expressed appreciation to the United States for its contribution to Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts. He specifically thanked US President Donald Trump for what he described as substantial support provided without public attention.

He said, “You have literally wiped out an entire generation of leaders from the ISWAP and ISIS organizations in Nigeria. Thank you and thank you to President Trump. Incredible support, but you remained silent about it.”

The NSA also acknowledged the United Kingdom and France for their continued involvement in Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism, saying both countries had consistently supported the country.

Ribadu further commended Algeria’s decision to enter Niger as part of broader efforts to stabilise the Sahel, which he described as the centre of major global problems.

He said Nigeria needed international and regional support, stressing the importance of cooperation with Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali and Chad to confront the shared security threat.

According to Ribadu, terrorist groups operate across national borders and coordinate their activities, making it necessary for countries in the Sahel to strengthen their own cooperation.

He added that the international community would be more willing to support Africa if countries in the region demonstrated unity in tackling terrorism and violent extremism.

Ribadu also praised the organisers of the forum for providing a platform for African countries to exchange experiences and strengthen cooperation against terrorism.
