According to a video from 53:12 posted on the official YouTube channel of MIC ON PODCAST on Saturday, July 11, 2026, Law professor, Tufts University, Chidi Odinkalu, questioned the propriety of state governors directly funding benefits for judges, arguing that such practices could undermine judicial independence.

Speaking during the interview, Odinkalu criticized the growing trend of governors donating official vehicles and other expensive items to members of the judiciary. He maintained that financial support for judges should be provided through established institutional channels rather than through discretionary gestures by elected officials.

Raising a key concern, he asked, “A governor has money to procure vehicles for judges; why is that not in the judicial budget?”

Odinkalu argued that if vehicles are genuinely required for judicial duties, the funding should be appropriated within the judiciary’s budget to preserve the separation of powers and prevent any perception of undue influence.

He further stated that the Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers sets limits on the gifts judges may receive. According to him, expensive items such as official vehicles and houses could fall within the category of prohibited gifts, raising ethical questions about judicial impartiality.
