Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, has urged Christians to look beyond outward standards of dressing and jewellery, warning that pride, political manoeuvring within the church and other ungodly attitudes also contradict biblical teachings.

Kumuyi gave the warning in a sermon shared on YouTube from 21:20, explaining that separation from worldly values involves believers’ attitudes, ambitions and conduct, not just their physical appearance.

Addressing Christians who avoid jewellery because of their understanding of Scripture, the cleric said, “My friend, it’s not enough that we don’t wear earrings. The word of God says we shouldn’t, so we don’t. But that’s not enough,” he said.

He also defended modest dressing, arguing that believers should avoid clothing that exposes their bodies in ways that could tempt others. However, he stressed that dressing neatly and reasonably was only one aspect of Christian living.

Explaining his position, Kumuyi said, “We don’t love their dressing. We don’t love the exposure of the body of the man or the body of the woman, that will bring temptation to other people. So we dress neatly. We dress reasonably. That is scriptural. But that’s not the end,” he said.

The preacher further identified pride and political struggles within the church as forms of worldliness, criticising people who seek to remove someone from a position of influence to install a person of their choice.

Condemning such behaviour, Kumuyi said, “Pride is also of the world. Politics in the church is also of the world. Wanting to kick out one and bring out your favourite is also the world right there,” Kumuyi said.

He cited 1 John 2:15 and 1 John 2:16 to reinforce his message, pointing to the biblical warnings against loving the world and pursuing its desires and pride.

Kumuyi urged Christians to examine their hearts and behaviour, emphasising that being born again should be reflected in victory over worldly attitudes, humility and godly character, rather than compliance with outward standards alone.
