According to a report by The Cable on Monday, May 25, 2026, Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called for dialogue with armed bandits operating in different parts of northern Nigeria, saying many of them are willing to surrender their weapons if authorities are prepared to listen to their concerns and create an atmosphere that encourages peaceful engagement instead of continued violence and distrust.
Gumi said, “These people (bandits) told us they are ready to lay down their arms, but what are their conditions? Has anybody listened to them?”
The cleric explained that resolving insecurity in the region would require a combination of military operations, dialogue, and social intervention, adding that lasting peace could only be achieved when all parties involved are given the opportunity to express their grievances and participate in reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring stability and rebuilding trust within affected communities.
Gumi also maintained that many communities across the northern region have continued to suffer from repeated attacks, displacement, and economic hardship, noting that meaningful engagement with those involved in the crisis could help reduce violence and create room for long-term solutions that would benefit residents, security agencies, and the country as a whole….Read_More…
