Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has shared a deeply personal account of his actions during one of the most difficult periods of his life under the regime of late military ruler Sani Abacha.
Speaking in an interview from 25:15 on News Central on Saturday, April 25, 2026, Obasanjo reflected on how he chose to respond to tragedy despite the circumstances surrounding his imprisonment.
Obasanjo recalled that even though he was incarcerated under Abacha’s government, he still reached out in a moment of grief when the military leader lost his son in a plane crash.
Emphasizing the humanity behind his decision, he stated, “Abacha put me in prison, when his Son died in a plane crash I wrote him a letter of condolence”, he further revealed that his gesture did not end there.
According to him, he also extended condolences following Abacha’s own death, reaching out to the late leader’s family even before regaining his freedom.
