The once peaceful community of Chanchanji in Taraba state is descending into fear, with residents seen fleeing their homes on Sunday morning, luggage in hand, desperately searching for transport out of the town following fresh attacks by suspected militia.

Reverend Father Samuel Ogah of Holy Family Schools in Takum has lamented that the violence has led to parents pulling their children out of schools after a militia group issued threats of an imminent attack on the area.

Speaking in an interview from 1:11 with Arise TV, Father Ogah said, “A lot of our students are no longer coming because they come from this environment. It is when you are alive that you can study. So they are gone. The numbers keep reducing, and the ones that are still around are not completely settled — they are not sure of their tomorrow,” he said.

Father Ogah highlighted that the withdrawal of students was not limited to fear alone, but reflected a broader decision by parents to relocate their children to areas they considered safer. The exodus, he said, had severely disrupted school activities, leaving classrooms emptied and the future of the institution hanging in the balance for as long as the insecurity in the area persisted.
