Ibrahim Iliyasu, an FCT senatorial aspirant under the NDC, revealed that the controversial primary election within the federal capital territory was plagued by severe procedural irregularities that completely derailed the internal democratic exercise for the opposition party.
According to a video from 09:15 posted on the official YouTube channel of Trust TV on Monday, July 6, 2026, while addressing the party’s internal crisis, he stated, “there was no primary in the FCT, because on the pre-primary night we had a meeting at our headquarters where the procedures were read to us, and we discovered that it was contrary to the Electoral Act 2026 as amended.”
The prominent politician explained that stakeholders immediately rejected the proposed guidelines during the crucial meeting because the rules violated national electoral laws and could potentially compromise the absolute integrity of the entire political contest.
Iliyasu noted that the electoral committee chairman eventually conceded to the superior arguments of the aspirants, but structural breakdowns ultimately prevented any actual voting from taking place across the six area councils on election day.
