Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reflected on his relationship with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his decision to choose him as his running mate during his presidency.

Speaking in a video from 0:23 posted on Arise Television on Friday, July 31, 2026, Obasanjo responded to questions about his former deputy, saying that his perception of Atiku changed after they had worked together in government. He stated that, despite their differences, he harbored no bitterness and remained focused on governing Nigeria during his time in office.

According to him, “I don’t know what name you want to give him. I mean that. It’s true. But of course, what I know about him later makes me thank God because God did not allow his actions and reactions to overwhelm me or to divert my own focus from Nigeria or to harm Nigeria.”
