Former Member of the House of Representatives and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Sergius Ogun, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the removal of fuel subsidy, accusing him of taking a position in government that contradicts the stance he adopted as an opposition leader during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Ogun made the remarks during an interview from 15:38 on News Central TV, on Saturday, 6 June, 2026, while discussing economic reforms and the political debates surrounding subsidy removal in Nigeria.
Reacting to the Tinubu administration’s decision to remove fuel subsidy, Ogun recalled the widespread protests that followed a similar move by Jonathan’s government in 2012. He argued that many of the political figures who opposed the policy at the time are now implementing the same measure while defending its necessity.
“When you talk about subsidy removal. Jonathan did that in 2012. The same president, Tinubu brought people to the streets that almost led to military coup,” Ogun said.
The former lawmaker contended that the opposition’s resistance to subsidy removal during the Jonathan era contributed significantly to public unrest and placed immense pressure on the government.
