Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Media and Policy Communications, has stood by his much-criticised comment that a Nigerian on ₦60,000 monthly may be better off than a UK care worker on £2,600. Speaking 59:04 to host Olawale Olad on SYMFONI, Bwala said the viral clip cut out the full picture. He was talking about non-citizen care staff who, after tax, rent, and transport in London, are left with barely £200 a month.
In Bwala’s words: “Somebody who earns £2,600 in the UK, after deductions, about £2,400 goes back to the system. What that person actually earns that comes to him might be £200-something. Within that £200-something, he uses it for transport to commute in London. He has to stay in probably Zone 6 to have cheaper accommodation, or he has to take a second job.”
He added: “A care job in the UK is just a little above minimum wage. Somebody who works in a care home and somebody who works here where they get minimum wage, they are at the same level.
