The Presidency has dismissed suggestions that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reported trip to Saudi Arabia is for medical treatment, following comments by African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore had urged Nigerians to pray for Tinubu, drawing a comparison between the president’s repeated trips to France and the overseas medical visits made by former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

In a statement, the activist wrote, “Pray for Tinubu. Like Umar Musa Yar’Adua who initially sought treatment in Germany before traveling to Saudi Arabia, Tinubu has made repeated trips to France and he’s now heading to Saudi Arabia”.

Responding to the remarks, Dada Olusegun, Special Adviser to Tinubu on Social Media, said the president was travelling to Saudi Arabia for religious observances rather than medical care.

Olusegun explained that Tinubu intended to perform Umrah, also known as the Lesser Hajj, and pray for Nigeria. He added that the president would commit his re-election plans to God during the visit.

Clarifying the purpose of the trip in a post on his official X account, the presidential aide said, “President Tinubu is not heading to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment. He is heading to the Holy Land for Lesser Hajj (Umrah), like other Muslims across the world, to offer supplications for the country and commit his re-election journey into the hands of God”.
