Maxwell Opara, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has claimed that residents in some communities in his constituency are so frustrated with politicians that they have threatened to beat anyone who visits to paste campaign posters.
Speaking from 5:58 on Arise Television on Monday, October 26, 2026, Opara said he had been campaigning since August, visiting communities where he grew up and attended primary and secondary school.
He said his familiarity with the area had exposed him to the challenges facing residents, including poor road access and disruptions to education.
Describing conditions in one of the communities, Opara said, “If you go to my Facebook page, you will see a community I attended, no road, they are living in bush. The school, the primary school and the secondary school has been cut off from, the student doesn’t attend school again,” Opara said.
He added that residents had expressed their reluctance to receive politicians but allowed him to campaign because he had never held public office or contested an elective position.
Explaining the residents’ reaction to other politicians, Opara said, “So what they are now talking about is that any politician who is coming there to paste poster, they will beat the politician up. Go there and verify,” he said.
Opara identified the areas he was referring to as Omoku in Esiniste and other communities, urging people to visit and see the conditions for themselves. He said that if elected to the House of Representatives, he would work to ensure that allocations intended for the communities reached them.
“Now, what am I telling them? I’m telling them that if I’m elected as somebody representing a house, this is a federal constituency, as a House member, I will make sure that any allocation sent to them must go to them,” he said.
