In a viral video posted by PUNCH News, the wives of an Ogun State-based traditionalist who reportedly died after setting himself ablaze have broken their silence, claiming they were told their husband took the drastic step after allegedly being betrayed by another woman.
Speaking about the incident, the women said they were devastated by the news and described the deceased as a kind-hearted man who never gave them any indication that he was contemplating suicide.
According to them, they were not at the scene when the incident occurred and only learned of it after receiving a phone call informing them that their husband had died.
“They just called me that I should come that our husband has died and I should call my co-wife. We didn’t hear anything prior to that time they called us he was dead,” one of the wives said.
The women explained that the account they received from neighbours was that the traditionalist had allegedly been jilted and betrayed by a woman with whom he was living at the time of the incident.
They said they were informed that following a disagreement, he allegedly set himself on fire.
According to the wives, the woman was reportedly in the hospital when the incident happened and was therefore unable to explain exactly what transpired.
“The only thing we heard was that he fought with the wife he was living with. The wife was in the hospital at the time he set himself ablaze, so she too could not explain what really happened,” one of them stated.
The women added that the deceased was no longer living with them and insisted that anyone seeking the full details of the incident should direct their questions to the woman he had been staying with.
Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding his death, the wives said they had accepted the loss and were trying to move on with their lives.
“We have accepted our fate and moved on with life. There is nothing we can do about it,” one of the wives said.
The incident has generated reactions within the community, with many expressing sadness over the tragic death while calling for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances that led to the traditionalist’s actions.
