In a recent interview from 13:26 on PAPShow, on Sunday, September 6, 2026, Zainab Nasir Ahmed, Executive Director of the Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Disease and Social Vices (YOSPIS), discussed the influence of social media on Nigerian politics and the importance of grassroots support ahead of the 2027 election.
Nasir explained that social media has become an important communication platform for politicians, allowing them to reach large numbers of citizens and promote their political messages directly.
Speaking about Peter Obi’s online popularity, Nasir said, “Just because you are on social media and have millions of followers does not mean you will win.” She stressed that having millions of followers online does not automatically translate into votes during an election.
According to Nasir, many people who participate actively in political discussions on social media are not necessarily the same people who will visit polling units to cast their ballots.
She noted that social media can create conversations and influence public opinion, but grassroots voters remain crucial to determining electoral outcomes.
Nasir acknowledged Obi’s strong presence on social media, particularly among young Nigerians, but said his political influence must also be considered beyond the internet.
She argued that Nigeria is a complex and diverse country, requiring presidential candidates to understand different regions, communities and interests.
The YOSPIS Executive Director maintained that candidates must combine online communication with grassroots mobilisation if they want to win a presidential election.
She also referenced the 2023 election, noting that some Obi supporters believed his large social media following represented nationwide electoral strength.
Nasir concluded that social media popularity can provide visibility, but presidential victory ultimately depends on building broad support among voters across Nigeria.
