Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist Professor Chidi Odinkalu has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its explanation for questionable entries featuring what appear to be AI-generated images in the voters’ register.

Odinkalu reacted in a post on his official X account on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after the electoral commission acknowledged that some registration records had been flagged for review.

In its statement, INEC said it had identified questionable records during the physical display of the register and had begun reviewing them to correct the errors in line with its established procedures.

The commission stated, “During the physical display, a number of questionable registration records were identified and flagged for further examination. The Commission commenced the process of reviewing these records and taking appropriate corrective action in accordance with established procedures”.

However, Odinkalu argued that the explanation did not adequately address the concerns raised by the questionable entries. He also alleged that the commission was compromised, questioning its response to records that appeared to contain AI-generated images.

Reacting to INEC’s statement, Odinkalu wrote, “The commission now acknowledges multiple dubious entries that look like they are AI generated and merely says it is examining the circumstances surrounding their occurrence, including possible technical and procedural lapses”.
