In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, Chris Nwaokobia Jr. reflected on Nigeria’s 2023 general elections and the political implications of voting patterns in key states, with particular emphasis on Lagos State.

During the interview from 37:54, Nwaokobia stated, “In Lagos State, where President Tinubu governed for eight years, he lost to Peter Obi.” He used the statement to highlight what he described as shifting voter behaviour and the growing influence of issue-based politics in Nigeria’s electoral system.

He referred to the presidential candidate of the Peter Obi and the election performance in Lagos State as an example of how voter sentiment can defy political strongholds, even in areas traditionally considered strongholds of powerful political figures.

Nwaokobia also referenced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that despite his long-standing political influence in Lagos, the 2023 election results demonstrated that electoral outcomes are not always determined by historical dominance or party structure alone.

He further argued that the results underscored the importance of voter engagement, public perception of governance, and the role of the electorate in shaping democratic outcomes. The Country First Movement convener emphasized that democracy is strengthened when elections reflect the genuine will of the people, adding that unexpected electoral outcomes should be seen as evidence of a functioning democratic process rather than an anomaly.

He concluded by urging political actors to study voter behaviour more closely and focus on governance and accountability, insisting that future elections, including those in 2027, will continue to reflect the evolving expectations of Nigerian citizens. Read_More…
