Lateef Olayinka, a resident of the Warders’ Barracks in Ikoyi, has described the strict security procedures that residents experience because of the barracks’ close proximity to the Ikoyi Correctional Centre. Speaking during an interview from 2:32 on Trust TV on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, he explained that movement within the area is tightly controlled whenever inmates are being transported outside the correctional facility.
According to Olayinka, the security measures are routinely enforced to ensure the safe movement of prisoners to and from the correctional centre. He noted that everyone living in the barracks, including correctional officers, their families and other residents, must comply with the restrictions whenever inmates are scheduled to appear in court or leave the facility for official assignments.
He explained that during such operations, residents are temporarily prevented from moving around the barracks until correctional officials confirm that the prisoners have safely exited the premises. The procedures, he said, are mandatory and are strictly implemented without exceptions.
Describing the situation, Olayinka said, “If they are taking the prisoners to court, even we living inside the barracks won’t be able to pass because they will tell us to go back that prisoners are coming outside.”
He added that the restrictions have become a normal part of daily life for people living within the barracks. Residents have become accustomed to waiting for security personnel to complete the movement of inmates before they are permitted to continue with their own activities.
Olayinka explained that although the measures may sometimes cause temporary inconvenience, they are considered necessary because of the security risks associated with transporting inmates outside the correctional facility. According to him, the authorities place a high priority on maintaining order and preventing any security breaches during prisoner movements.
