A Nigerian woman, Mary Ekundayo, has spoken about her upbringing and how it shaped her views on marriage, following reactions to a viral video of her kneeling to submit her salary to her husband.

She made this known during an interview from 6:57 on Your View on TVC Communications, where she appeared with her husband, John Ekundayo, to address the public backlash.

Speaking during the interview, she said, “My mother was an idol worshipper, but she brought me up very well and she taught me to always love and submit to my husband.”

She explained that despite her mother’s religious background, she was raised with discipline and strong values that shaped her understanding of marriage.

She disclosed that she always saw her mum kneel before her father every morning and she has incorporated that into her marriage. This has influenced her belief that submission is an important part of marriage.

According to her, the decision to kneel for her husband is personal and not forced. She described it as a sign of respect and a practice she chooses to maintain in her home.
