Former Inspector-General of Police Mike Okiro has recalled how a police chief was removed from office after transferring a commissioner of police out of a state over concerns about his performance.

Speaking in an interview from 11:53  with Arise TV, Okiro explained that the Inspector-General had moved the commissioner because of the high crime rate and worsening insecurity in the state. However, the president was abroad when the decision was made.

According to Okiro, the situation changed when the president returned to the country and questioned the IGP about the transfer at the airport. The police chief reportedly defended his decision by arguing that the commissioner had failed to address the security challenges in the state.

Okiro said the president reversed the posting and returned the commissioner to the state, before the Inspector-General was removed from office three days later.

Recounting the incident, Okiro said, “An IG posted a commissioner of police out of a state because he was not performing. The president was outside the country, when he came back at the airport he asked the IG why he removed the commissioner. The IG said ‘Because the man is not performing, insecurity in that state is so much, crime rate is so high’. The president returned the commissioner and 3 days later the IG was removed”
