Mr. Olusola Sani, Strategic Media Associate to Atiku Abubakar, has asked President Bola Tinubu not to block any attempt at presenting public documents that back up the alleged drug case against him. He made the call while defending the Atiku camp’s decision to raise a U.S. forfeiture case in 1993 involving the president.
In an interview from 3:25 with Channels Television, Sani was asked about the renewed circulation of a U.S. Department of Justice document relating to the forfeiture case and why the Atiku camp keeps bringing it up, especially with elections approaching. The presidency had described it as a smear campaign to make the president look bad.
Sani replied that the claim is not correct. He said the case has been there since 1993, according to public records, and it borders on the conscience of the country because the president is the major person at the center of that scandal. He argued that it is not asking for too much to demand that the president present all the details of that accusation.
When it was put to Sani that the matter had been laid to rest after a final forfeiture and there is no case in court against Tinubu, Sani insisted the matter must come back because it was never really closed. He explained that forfeiture by its very nature implies an admittance of wrongdoing and that the wheel of justice never stops turning.
He further stated that the issue is being raised again because there are currently cases in American courts involving the FBI and DEA that concern the public release of documents related to that forfeiture. He said that is all the country needs to know.
Sani said that what Nigerians are asking for is full disclosure. If the matter was indeed closed, he said the documents should be made public.
