Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats, has recalled how former President Muhammadu Buhari established his reputation after taking power in 1983, highlighting his administration’s anti-corruption campaign and response to security threats.

Speaking during an interview from 9:14 on Channels Television, Ardo said he was in his final year at university when Buhari took over the government.

He recalled the administration’s campaign against corruption, as well as its response to the Maitatsine crisis and the pursuit of Chadian rebels across the border.

Ardo said these actions helped distinguish Buhari’s administration and linked its approach to the earlier governments of Murtala Mohammed and Olusegun Obasanjo.

Recalling the period, Ardo said, “When Buhari took over in 1983, we were in our final year at the university. His administration launched a war against corruption. The way he fought Maitatsine and chased the Chadian rebels back to Chad helped him establish a niche for himself, and he described his regime as an offshoot of the Murtala-Obasanjo regime.”
