According to a report by The Times Of Israel on May 3, 2026, amid an increase in drone attacks by Hezbollah targeting Israel Defense Forces troops in southern Lebanon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the launch of a dedicated initiative to address the growing threat.
“A few weeks ago, I ordered the establishment of a special project to counter the drone threat,” he says in a video statement, “and already today I will be presented with a progress report on the matter.” He acknowledged that results would not be immediate, adding, “It will take time — but we are on it.”
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel’s defense procurement strategy will prioritize strengthening operational capabilities while increasing self-reliance. He revealed that the country is in the process of acquiring two squadrons of advanced fighter jets, including the F-35 Lightning II and F-15IA. “These aircraft reinforce Israel’s overwhelming air superiority, a superiority that was proven in Operation Rising Lion and now in Operation Roaring Lion,” he says.
Highlighting operational readiness, Netanyahu stated, “Our pilots can reach anywhere in the skies of Iran, and they are prepared to do so — if required.”
On the issue of defense independence, he said, “I have instructed investment in domestic production capabilities for munitions.” He disclosed that Israel plans to allocate NIS 350 billion over the next decade to expand local weapons manufacturing.
