Former Nigerian senator Shehu Sani has sparked fresh debate on political bias and regional sentiments in the country following his reaction to recent claims involving the hiring of a United States consultancy firm to pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with possible sanctions.

Taking to his social media platform, Sani argued that public reactions would have been significantly different if the same move had been attributed to former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi. According to him, such an action would have quickly been framed through a regional lens, with critics branding it a “Biafra agenda.”

Sani’s statement highlights what he perceives as double standards in Nigeria’s political discourse, particularly when actions are interpreted based on the individuals or regions involved. He suggested that political interests often shape narratives, influencing how similar situations are judged by the public and political actors.

The former lawmaker also referenced past controversies, including the criticism directed at Pastor Dachomo, who had reportedly taken concerns about insecurity in Northern Nigeria to the United States Congress. At the time, Dachomo faced backlash from some quarters, with critics accusing him of externalising Nigeria’s internal challenges.
