Chika Ekezie, an Imo State indigene living with HIV, has spoken about his past sexual behaviour, admitting that he had multiple partners and did not take the necessary precautions.

Ekezie, who publicly disclosed his HIV status in November 2024 after seven years of denying his condition, made the revelation while discussing how he discovered he was living with the virus.

He recalled experiencing recurring health problems, including fever, fatigue, pneumonia, night sweats, severe headaches and weight loss. Initially, he relied on medication from pharmacies and rested whenever he felt better, rather than seeking proper medical attention.

However, after the illnesses continued, he eventually visited a hospital, where medical tests confirmed his HIV status.

Ekezie also cautioned against assuming that experiencing similar symptoms automatically means someone has HIV. He stressed that getting tested is the only way to determine a person’s status.

Explaining what he considered carelessness and recklessness in his past, he said he had ignored repeated health problems instead of investigating their causes. He advised people to consult medical professionals whenever they notice unusual changes in their bodies.

He further distinguished his sexual behaviour from his failure to seek medical care, admitting that he had not been mindful of the number of people he had sexual relationships with or the precautions required.

Reflecting on his past actions, Ekezie said, “My recklessness, on the other hand, was that I had too many sexual partners. I was promiscuous and engaged in sexual activities without restraint because I did not know better. I did not pay attention to the number of sexual partners I had or the precautions I needed to take.”
