Former Resident Electoral Commissioner Mike Igini has revealed that he believes he could have become a state governor many years ago if late politician MKO Abiola had not died.
Speaking in an interview from 09:49 with SYMFONI, Igini pointed to his record in student union politics as evidence of his leadership experience and qualifications for public office.
He recalled that his involvement in student leadership began in his first year when he became a member of Congress. By his second year, he had joined the parliament and risen to the position of deputy speaker, becoming the youngest person to hold the office at the time.
Igini said he later became speaker and secured re-election to the position in his third year before eventually serving as student union president in his final year. He also described himself as one of the leading academic performers in his faculty.
The former electoral commissioner maintained that his leadership and academic records demonstrated his capacity to lead, although he stressed that Nigeria’s political system needed to be reformed before the country could be properly led by qualified individuals.
Explaining why he believes he could have attained the governorship much earlier, Igini said, “If MKO had not died, probably several years ago I would have been a governor of a state, because from student union leadership, from year one I was a member of Congress, in year two I was in the parliament, and as the youngest person in the parliament I became deputy speaker. I subsequently became speaker, in year three I was reelected as the speaker of the parliament. Then in my final year I was the president of the student union, and equally, academically, I was also leading in my own faculty. So really, if we are talking about the best leading the country, I am more than qualified, but currently the system we have has to be fixed.”
