Speaking during an interview from 26:50 on Gbam Interview, Former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Osita Chidoka, spoke about the experience of Fred Eno, Chief MKO Abiola’s personal assistant, who was detained during a difficult period in Nigeria’s history.
Chidoka said Eno’s whereabouts were unknown for some time until he received information about where he was being held and decided to visit the prison in Enugu to find him.
Chidoka said he eventually found Eno in Enugu prison and discovered that he had become seriously ill during his detention, adding that the experience had placed his life at considerable risk.
Chidoka’s account highlights the personal experiences of individuals caught up in Nigeria’s political tensions and the importance of viewing such historical events beyond ethnic divisions.
In Chidoka’s words: “Nobody knew his whereabouts until I got information, so I went to Enugu Prison and found him there. He nearly died in the prison, so it wasn’t a Yoruba fight and we shouldn’t ethnicize it.”
