Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, has reacted after former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff stated that he discriminated against northerners while serving as governor of Anambra State.
In an interview from 17:33 with Channels Television, Obi stated that his two closest staff members when he was in the banking industry were from Kano. He added that many of his close friends are also from the North. Obi said every year he pays for at least one Muslim to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.
Obi stated that while serving as governor, he sponsored both Christians to go on pilgrimage and Muslims to perform Hajj. He added that he believes Ali Modu Sheriff never sponsored any Christian to go on pilgrimage while he was governor of Borno State.
In Obi’s words: “Before I became governor, my two closest staff from the bank were from Kano. All the people I have, even military friends were all from the north. Before I became governor, I have always till date paid for at least a Muslim every year to go to Hajj and I have records of that. As governor I was paying for Christians to go for pilgrimage and I was paying for Muslims to go for Hajj. I am sure while Sheriff was governor in Borno State he never paid for any Christian to go to pilgrimage”
