A physiotherapist and colleague of the late Mary Habila, Anita Baaki, has given a detailed account of the events leading to the nurse’s death, describing the last moments they spent together before the tragic incident.
According to Daily Post, Baaki’s account was contained in a sworn affidavit filed before the Ebonyi State High Court on Wednesday as part of the ongoing investigation into Habila’s death.
Baaki, who is from Benue State, explained that she travelled from Abuja to Ebonyi State with Habila and other officials of the Federal Ministry of Works on June 24, 2026, for an official assignment under the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
She stated that they were lodged in separate but adjoining rooms within a staff chalet located at the minister’s country home in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. According to her, the chalet served as accommodation for ministry staff and associates and was not the minister’s personal residence.
Baaki said the last time she saw Habila was on the evening of June 26 after the deceased returned from making her hair. She explained that Habila stopped by her room to show her new hairstyle before they chatted briefly.
“Habila told me she was tired and wanted to take a shower before sleeping. That was the last time I saw her alive,” Baaki stated in the affidavit.
She further explained that she became alarmed the following morning when Habila failed to come out of her room as expected. After several phone calls went unanswered, she knocked on the door but received no response.
Baaki said she alerted a domestic staff member to help search the premises, and when Habila could not be found elsewhere, other staff members were informed. She added that the room, which was locked from the inside, was eventually forced open.
According to her, Habila was found unconscious on the floor near the entrance of the room and was immediately rushed to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed that she was dead on arrival.
Baaki stated that she made the affidavit voluntarily and without any form of coercion to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.
Daily Post reported that police investigations are still ongoing, while lawyers representing the Minister of Works have requested a comprehensive forensic autopsy to determine the exact cause of death before Habila’s body is released to her family for burial….See More
