Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has paid tribute to the victims of the ADC Airlines Flight 53 crash, which occurred on October 29, 2006, shortly after the aircraft departed Abuja for Sokoto.

In a post shared on social media on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Sani remembered the disaster as one of the tragic events in Nigeria’s history, noting that 96 people died while nine survived.

The Boeing 737-200 aircraft had 105 people on board, including 100 passengers and five crew members, when it crashed shortly after taking off from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Among those who lost their lives were the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Maccido, who served as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, and his son, Senator Badamasi Maccido. Several other prominent Nigerians were also among the victims.

The crash occurred amid adverse weather conditions. An investigation later identified the decision to take off in unfavourable weather and the crew’s failure to carry out the appropriate windshear recovery procedure as key factors in the disaster.

Reflecting on the anniversary, Sani wrote, “On this day in 2006, ADC Airlines flight 53 flying from Abuja to Sokoto crashed immediately after takeoff. 96 died and 9 survived, including Sultan Maccido and other prominent Nigerians. A tragic day in the history of our country. May their souls continue to rest in peace, Amin,”
