Dr. Ibrahim Mani, National Treasurer of the African Democratic Congress, has dismissed claims that recent political moves by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Peter Obi were aligned with the party’s broader political strategy. Speaking during an interview from 3:25 on Trust TV on May 5, 2026, Mani described such assertions as inaccurate and misleading.
Addressing questions about whether the two politicians acted in line with the ADC’s vision, Mani firmly rejected the suggestion. He emphasized that their decisions did not reflect the party’s direction or collective plans, particularly at a time when opposition parties were expected to consolidate their efforts.
He stated: “No, it cannot be true. There is nothing that can be that far away from the truth. If you have been following recent events and commentaries, of course, there are a lot of people who have dissenting views as regards what can be considered more or less like political suicide that these two gentlemen…”
When asked directly if he regarded their actions as political suicide, Mani responded unequivocally, “Certainly, that’s exactly what happened.”
Expanding on his position, Mani explained that opposition politics in Nigeria had been evolving toward a unified front ahead of upcoming elections. According to him, data, statistics, and political assessments over the past two years suggested that a coordinated approach among major opposition figures could significantly improve their chances of electoral success.
He further noted that the idea of forming a coalition was not a sudden development but the result of extensive planning and negotiations. In his words: “Okay, so the trajectory has always been that the key opposition leaders in this country will go for these elections as a united front, knowing fully well that the data, statistics, and the polls that have been conducted within the last two years…”
