According to a report by Vanguard on Thursday, May 21, 2026, Wole Soyinka stated that, during the fight for the restoration of democracy, he stopped the late human rights activist Beko Ransome-Kuti from attempting to kill Head of State General Sani Abacha.
Soyinka said he saw Beko with a special kind of gun that could avoid detection by security machines. He said he asked Beko what he intended to do with the gun, and Beko replied that he planned to use it to kill Abacha.
Soyinka said he warned Beko that even if he succeeded in killing Abacha, he (Beko) would also be killed. He said he eventually collected the gun from Beko
