‎According to a report by Daily Post, on Tuesday May 5, 2026, the spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has questioned Peter Obi’s decision to leave the party, saying it appears inconsistent with his earlier position on opposition unity.

‎He stated the ADC had been committed to building democracy within a party structure that, in his view, offered the best opportunity to serve Nigerians, he recalled that during earlier coalition discussions, Obi had reportedly warned against division in the opposition.

‎He stated that Obi had once stated that if opposition forces presented two separate candidates against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it would likely weaken their chances and hand victory to the ruling party in 2027, based on that earlier position, Abdullahi asked what had changed in Obi’s political thinking.

‎He suggested that Obi’s current decision to leave the ADC appears to contradict the earlier call for unity among opposition groups, he stressed that the ADC had continued to advocate cooperation among political actors who share similar goals.

‎He stated that the party believed that a united opposition was necessary to challenge the ruling party effectively in future elections, he maintained that the ADC remained focused on democratic ideals and national interest rather than personal ambition.

‎According to him, political consistency is important because it helps build trust between leaders and the public, he added that sudden changes in position could raise questions about political commitment and strategy.
