According to a report by The Jerusalem Post on July 7, 2026, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei strongly criticized German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul over his remarks regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Baqaei described Wadephul’s comments as “utterly shameful” and accused Germany of responsibility for what he called “war crimes committed against the Iranian people,” making the remarks in a post published on X/Twitter on Tuesday.
Baqaei argued that Germany should be held accountable for what he described as its role in military actions targeting Iran. He claimed Berlin had taken part in what he referred to as aggression against the country and should face the consequences of its actions.
In his statement, Baqaei wrote, “Germany must be held fully accountable for its complicity in military aggression against Iran and bear the heavy costs of its active participation in the crime of aggression.”
His comments were issued after Wadephul suggested that Iran should cover the costs of clearing mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway used for global energy shipments. The German minister’s remarks came amid continued international concern over security and maritime navigation in the region.
The exchange highlights the growing diplomatic tensions between Tehran and several European governments following recent developments in the Middle East. Officials from both sides have continued to trade accusations as disagreements over regional security, military actions, and international responsibilities deepen.
