Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, has described July 7 as a date historically linked to cult-related violence in the state, saying cult groups have used the day to compete over who can kill more people.

Speaking during an interview from 16:13 with News Central TV, Afegbua said this year’s July 7 passed without any reported deaths or shootings involving cultists.

He credited the development to efforts by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration to curb cultism and improve security across Edo State. According to him, about 200 people recently renounced their membership of cult groups.

Afegbua added that the governor had pledged financial assistance for those who abandoned cultism, to support them in pursuing legitimate livelihoods and discourage them from returning to criminal activities.

Explaining the significance of the date, Afegbua said, “There is a date that is so notorious in Benin, that is 7/7, that is 7th of July. It is like a day when cultists in Edo would do some kind of competition of who can kill better. So this year we witnessed no death, no killing and no shooting”
