According to a report by Daily Post, on Tuesday July 21, 2026, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has extended an official apology to the Igbo community over the involvement of people from the state during the Nigerian Civil War, saying it is time to promote healing and strengthen relationships among all ethnic groups.
The governor made the remarks during a meeting with representatives of the Igbo community drawn from the 17 local government areas of Plateau State, the event took place at the Government House in Jos and focused on issues of unity, peace and development.
Addressing the gathering, Mutfwang acknowledged the painful history associated with the civil war and expressed regret over the role played by Plateau people during that period, he said the apology was intended to encourage reconciliation and help both communities move beyond the divisions created by the conflict decades ago.
The governor explained that many of those involved in the war acted under the circumstances and leadership that existed at the time, he noted that the present generation should concentrate on building stronger ties rather than allowing past events to continue shaping relationships.
He called on both Plateau residents and the Igbo community to work together in the spirit of brotherhood and shared progress, according to him, years of coexistence have created deep connections between the two groups, making unity and cooperation essential for the future.
“I apologise to the Igbos. We were deceived into going to war, and we regret it. No ethnic group has demonstrated the entrepreneurial spirit more than the Igbo.
