Retired U.S. Army General Jack Keane has called for the United States to expand its strategy against Iran beyond military strikes and economic sanctions, arguing that intelligence operations should play a greater role in weakening the country’s leadership.
Speaking during an interview from 4:04 with Sky News Australia on Thursday, July 23, 2026, the former U.S. Army Vice Chief of Staff said Washington should intensify efforts to undermine Iran’s ruling establishment while supporting those opposed to the government from within the country.
Keane made the remarks while discussing the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, insisting that military action and economic pressure alone would not be sufficient to achieve Washington’s strategic objectives.
According to him, the United States should combine sanctions, naval pressure and military operations with covert intelligence efforts aimed at weakening the Iranian regime.
“We need to use the CIA and the Mossad to undermine the regime and also to assist the Iranian people in their resistance,” Keane said.
The retired general argued that supporting internal opposition should be considered a key objective of U.S. strategy. He noted that the United States has previously conducted similar operations and suggested such efforts could again prove effective.
Keane also praised Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, saying it has established extensive networks inside Iran that could be leveraged in efforts to pressure the country’s leadership.
