According to a report by Al Jazeera on May 19, 2026, Australian Greens Party Senator Mehreen Faruqi has criticised the Australian government’s response to Israel’s alleged “piracy and kidnapping in international waters” following an attack on a humanitarian flotilla attempting to reach Gaza.

She said the federal government’s continued diplomatic position toward Israel was unacceptable, especially in light of the detention of Australian citizens involved in the mission. Faruqi argued that the situation reflects a serious moral and political failure by the Labor government, which currently holds power in Australia.

“It is beyond comprehension that this Labor government still calls Israel a friend after two years of genocide, and even the capture of Australian citizens is apparently not a red line for them,” Senator Faruqi said in a statement.

The senator further condemned what she described as international indifference to the incident, insisting that stronger action is needed from Canberra. She expressed concern over the treatment of activists aboard the flotilla and called for accountability in response to the unfolding situation. “It is appalling,” she said.

Faruqi also warned that ongoing violence and legal violations in the region appeared to face little restraint. “We know that there are no limits to Israel’s cruelty, no limits to the laws they will break, and our hearts and prayers are with the brave Australians and their comrades onboard this flotilla,” she added.

She urged Australians and the wider international community not to remain silent, stressing the importance of public pressure in response to the crisis. According to her, continued inaction from governments risks deepening global injustice and undermining humanitarian principles. “In the face of our government’s inaction and our government’s complicity, these courageous humanitarians have stood up and said enough is enough. We cannot forget them, and we must make our voices as loud as possible.”….Read_More…
