Strategist and Policy Adviser Baba Yusuf has recalled the arrest of wanted bandit and kidnapping suspect Yahaya Zango as an example of how effective intelligence gathering can help security agencies combat terrorism and other violent crimes in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview from 28:28 on Channels Television on Sunday, July 5, 2026, Baba Yusuf discussed the country’s worsening security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping. He argued that intelligence-led operations remain one of the most effective tools in identifying and apprehending criminals before they can carry out further attacks or evade justice.

According to him, security agencies must continue to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve inter-agency collaboration to prevent criminal elements from exploiting weaknesses in the nation’s security system. He stressed that sustained surveillance and comprehensive screening procedures are essential in addressing the evolving tactics employed by terrorist groups and armed bandits.

While highlighting the importance of proactive intelligence, Baba Yusuf cited the case of Yahaya Zango, a wanted bandit and kidnap suspect who was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in 2025.

He recalled that Zango was intercepted at the Abuja Hajj camp while allegedly attempting to leave Nigeria disguised as a pilgrim preparing to travel for the annual Hajj exercise.

“In 2025, wanted bandit, Zango was arrested by DSS in Abuja Hajj camp disguised as pilgrim,” Baba Yusuf said during the interview.

He noted that the operation underscored the importance of conducting thorough background checks and security screenings at sensitive locations such as airports, border crossings, and pilgrimage camps. According to him, such measures are necessary to prevent individuals wanted for serious crimes from escaping prosecution by blending into legitimate public activities.

Baba Yusuf also maintained that intelligence gathering should remain at the centre of Nigeria’s strategy against insecurity. He explained that timely information enables security agencies to disrupt criminal networks, track the movement of suspects, and prevent planned attacks before they occur.
